Hip Replacement Abroad 2026: Costs, Best Countries, and Recovery

Hip replacement abroad saves 60-75% vs UK and US prices. Compare Turkey, Czech Republic, and Germany. What implants are used and how long recovery takes.

Hip replacement is one of the most successful operations in medicine — and one of the most common reasons patients travel abroad. NHS waiting times can exceed 18 months, US prices exceed $40,000, and quality destinations like Turkey and Czech Republic offer the same procedure, same implants, and comparable outcomes at a fraction of the cost.

Hip Replacement Costs by Country

Country Total hip replacement Hip resurfacing Notes
UK (NHS) 12–18 month wait
UK (private) £13,000–20,000 £12,000–18,000
USA $30,000–50,000 $25,000–40,000
Turkey $7,000–12,000 $8,000–13,000 JCI hospitals
Czech Republic €8,000–14,000 €9,000–15,000 EU standards
Germany €16,000–25,000 €15,000–22,000 Top quality
Thailand $9,000–14,000 $10,000–15,000 Popular from Australia

Total Hip Replacement vs Hip Resurfacing

Total hip replacement (THR): both the femoral head (ball) and acetabulum (socket) are replaced with metal and ceramic/polyethylene components. The gold standard for most patients over 60.

Hip resurfacing: only the surfaces are capped/replaced, preserving more bone. Better for younger, more active patients (<60). If it eventually fails, a full replacement is still possible.

Your orthopedic surgeon will recommend based on age, bone density, activity level, and X-ray findings.

Implant Options

The implant makes a significant difference to longevity. International standard brands:

Ask your clinic specifically which implant brand and model they use. In Turkey, major hospitals use the same international brands as UK and US hospitals.

Ceramic vs Metal-on-Polyethylene: What’s Best?

Modern hip replacements use either:

Ceramic head on polyethylene cup: excellent durability, low wear rate, no metal ions. Current favorite for most patients. Lasts 20–25+ years in most cases.

Ceramic on ceramic: extremely low wear, but slight risk of “squeaking.” Used less commonly now.

Metal on metal: largely fallen out of favor due to metal ion concerns and implant recalls. Avoid unless specifically recommended for a good reason.

Planning Your Trip

Before traveling:

In-country timeline:

Flying After Hip Replacement

Most surgeons clear patients to fly 10–14 days after surgery. Use compression stockings on the flight and walk every 30–45 minutes. The risk of DVT is elevated after hip surgery — moving regularly on the flight is essential.

Request a bulkhead or exit row seat — you need space to keep the hip at the correct angle (no extreme flexion beyond 90 degrees in early recovery).

Recovery at Home

Full hip replacement recovery takes 3–6 months. Key milestones:

Physiotherapy for 6–8 weeks after return is important. Your home GP can arrange this on referral.

Anterior vs Posterior Approach

Posterior approach — traditional, most common. Slightly higher dislocation risk in early recovery (follow precautions: no crossing legs, no bending beyond 90 degrees).

Anterior approach — muscle-sparing, faster recovery, lower dislocation risk. Not all surgeons offer it. Ask if available.

Several Turkish and Czech hospitals now routinely offer the anterior approach. If faster recovery is a priority, ask specifically.
