Turkey and Mexico are the world’s two biggest destinations for weight-loss surgery, and they barely compete with each other. One serves Europe and the Middle East; the other serves North America. The prices are close enough that geography does almost all the deciding — and the safety question that hangs over both is really a question about the specific hospital.
Choose Turkey if…
- You live in Europe, the UK or the Middle East — Istanbul is roughly 3–4 hours from Western Europe
- You want a longer all-inclusive stay with 3–5 hotel nights built into the package
- You want a choice between a dedicated bariatric centre and a large JCI hospital
- You need Arabic, Russian or French alongside English
Choose Mexico if…
- You live in the US or Canada — Tijuana is minutes from the border
- You want to drive rather than fly, and get home quickly if something needs attention
- A shorter in-country stay suits you better
- You want a JCI-accredited hospital close to home

Prices are published package figures. A US patient flying to Istanbul, or a European flying to Tijuana, erases any difference in the headline.
The Safety Question, Answered Specifically
Bariatric surgery in Tijuana carries a reputation, and it comes from something real. Between January 2018 and December 2019, the CDC identified 44 cases of drug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa in US patients across 19 states, almost all after bariatric surgery in Tijuana — 89.5% of them sleeve gastrectomies. Of the 38 patients investigated, 16 (42.1%) were later hospitalised in the US, four in intensive care, and one died.
The detail that matters is where they were treated. 27 of the 38 had surgery at the same facility, and 31 with the same surgeon. When Mexico’s Federal Commission for Protection Against Sanitary Risk inspected it, they found poor hand hygiene, incomplete medical records and no chemical or biological indicators to confirm instruments were sterile. That facility closed in March 2019.
What that means in practice: the risk was concentrated, not spread evenly across a country. The same is true in Turkey. The protection is to choose a hospital whose infection control is independently checked — international accreditation is the clearest signal — and to ask directly how instruments are sterilised and verified.

Questions That Matter More Than the Price
- Who is the surgeon, and how many of this procedure do they do a year?
- Is the hospital internationally accredited, and can you see the certificate?
- How are instruments sterilised and verified? A good hospital will answer specifically.
- What happens if you have a leak or infection after you’re home? Who do you call, and who pays?
- What follow-up is included? Long-term success depends on diet and monitoring for months, not on the operation alone.
