The price comparison for bariatric surgery in Prague is less dramatic than most in this series, so it goes first:
| Country | Gastric sleeve |
|---|---|
| Spain | $8,500–13,000 |
| Czech Republic | $10,000–15,000 |
| UK (private) | £8,500–14,000 |
That is competitive with Western Europe, not a fraction of it. If a big saving is the goal, the Czech Republic isn’t where you’ll find it — and Spain is, on these figures, slightly cheaper.
So the case has to rest on something else. Here, it rests on specialisation.
A Centre That Does Only This
OB Klinika performs over 500 bariatric operations a year, and bariatric surgery is its only specialisation. Gastric sleeve, bypass and band — with EU-trained surgeons, a multidisciplinary team, and full pre- and post-operative support.
That last part is the substance. Weight-loss surgery is unusual in how little of the outcome is decided in the operating theatre. What happens before — dietary preparation, psychological assessment, managing conditions like diabetes — and what happens after — nutritional follow-up, supplementation, monitoring for deficiencies over years — determines whether the operation works.
A general hospital can perform a technically good sleeve. A centre that does nothing else is built around the entire pathway, because that pathway is its whole business. At 500+ operations a year, its surgeons are also operating on this anatomy several times a week.
Choosing the Procedure
OB Klinika performs all three main procedures, which matters because the right one depends on you:
- Gastric sleeve — most of the stomach removed, leaving a narrow tube. Currently the most commonly performed.
- Gastric bypass — reroutes digestion around most of the stomach and part of the small intestine. Often considered where there is significant reflux or type 2 diabetes.
- Gastric band — an adjustable ring around the top of the stomach. Less commonly performed than it once was.
A centre offering only one of these can only recommend that one. Having all three available means the recommendation can follow your case.
Where Care Actually Happens
OB Klinika (Prague) — a leading Czech bariatric centre performing over 500 weight-loss surgeries a year, covering gastric sleeve, bypass and band procedures with EU-trained surgeons, a multidisciplinary team and full pre- and post-op support. ISO 9001 certified, rated 4.7/5 across 287 reviews, budget pricing within the Czech market. English, German and Czech spoken.
It is Wellmap’s only verified bariatric clinic in the Czech Republic.
The EU Reimbursement Step
As in our other Czech guides, EU/EEA patients should check reimbursement before booking. Under Directive 2011/24/EU, treatment that would be covered at home can be reimbursed up to the home cost — but bariatric surgery involves a hospital stay, so prior authorisation is normally required, and your home system’s eligibility criteria (typically BMI thresholds and prior weight-management attempts) still apply. Apply first, travel second.
What This Means in Practice
The Czech Republic makes the most sense for patients who:
- Want a dedicated bariatric centre with the whole pre- and post-operative pathway built in
- Are undecided between sleeve, bypass and band, and want a centre that performs all three
- Are EU/EEA citizens who may qualify for reimbursement and will apply before travelling
- Speak German or English and want EU regulatory standards on a short flight
It makes less sense purely on price, where Spain comes out slightly lower and Turkey lower still.
What to Bring
- Your weight history, including previous diets, programmes and medications tried — this is part of eligibility almost everywhere
- Current BMI and any recent measurements
- Full medical history, especially diabetes, reflux, sleep apnoea, heart disease and previous abdominal surgery
- Recent bloodwork, including HbA1c if you are diabetic
- Current medication list
- A plan for follow-up at home — who will monitor your nutrition in the months afterwards
Getting Started
Ask what the post-operative follow-up looks like for someone who lives abroad — how long it runs, what can be done remotely, and what needs a return visit. For bariatric surgery that answer matters more than the operation price. See verified bariatric clinics in the Czech Republic, or ask our AI assistant — describe your situation and which procedure you’re considering.
