Most destinations in this series compete on price. South Korea does not — it is meaningfully cheaper than the US, but it is not cheap, and if cost is your only constraint there are better answers in this series. The Reason to Look at Korea Specifically
In April 2023, the Yonsei Cancer Center in Seoul treated its first patient with carbon-ion therapy — the first facility of its kind in Korea, and, according to a peer-reviewed status report on the centre, only the fifteenth in the world since Japan’s NIRS opened the first in 1994.
Carbon-ion (heavy-ion) therapy is a form of radiotherapy that deposits most of its energy at a precise depth rather than along the whole beam path. In practice, that means it can be aimed at tumours sitting against structures you cannot afford to irradiate, and at tumours that conventional radiotherapy struggles to kill. The catch has always been availability: the machines are enormous — each rotating gantry at Yonsei is 9 metres long and weighs 200 tonnes — and there are fewer than twenty centres worldwide.

- The centre began with prostate cancer, and roughly 200 prostate patients had been treated by the time that status report was written
- Expansion to pancreatic, liver, lung, and head and neck cancers was planned using the gantry rooms

South Korea makes the most sense for patients who:
- Have a cancer type where carbon-ion therapy is a genuine option and cannot access it at home — this is the case where Korea beats every cheaper destination in this series
- Have been told their tumour is difficult to target with conventional radiotherapy because of what sits next to it
- Want a hospital with a long institutional record in oncology and full interpreter support, and can afford premium pricing
- Are facing a long wait at home and need to start sooner
If price is your binding constraint, look at Malaysia, Mexico or Georgia instead. If you need cellular therapy specifically, Israel is the better-targeted answer. Korea earns its premium on one particular capability — pay it for that reason, not for a general sense that the care is advanced.
