But most cardiac patients never reach an operating theatre. They need a diagnosis, a plan, medication that works, and — if things go wrong — a hospital that handles a heart attack well. That is cardiology, and it is a different question with a different answer.
The Certification Worth Knowing About
Mediclinic City Hospital’s Heart and Vascular team holds a Joint Commission International certification for its Acute Coronary Syndrome programme, achieved in November 2021 following a JCI survey. It was the first such certification in the UAE.
This is not the same as the hospital-wide JCI accreditation, and the distinction is the useful part. Hospital-wide accreditation says the institution meets a broad standard. An ACS programme certification says an independent body examined one specific pathway: what happens from the moment someone arrives with a suspected heart attack — ST-elevation myocardial infarction, unstable angina — through diagnosis to intervention, including the expertise of the cardiologists, nursing staff and cardiac physiologists involved.
Why that matters: in an acute coronary event the variable that most determines outcome is time, and time is a function of process, not of any one person’s skill. A certified pathway means somebody independent checked that the process is standardised and consistent, rather than depending on who is on shift. JCI’s own framing is that it reduces variation and clinical risk by making the approach the same for every patient.
If you are choosing a country partly because an acute event is a live possibility, that is a more relevant credential than a surgical reputation.

What This Means in Practice
The UAE makes the most sense for patients who:
- Live in or travel regularly through the Gulf and want cardiac care that doesn’t require a special trip
- Are within a short flight from South Asia, the Middle East or East Africa and want a JCI-accredited environment without flying to Europe
- Have an acute coronary risk and are specifically buying the emergency pathway rather than an elective procedure
- Need diagnosis and ongoing management rather than surgery
It makes least sense for routine diagnostics chosen on price. This is the premium end, and an echocardiogram costs a fraction of this in Georgia or the Czech Republic. Paying Dubai rates for a test available anywhere buys nothing.
What to Bring
- Full cardiac history: prior diagnoses, ECGs, echocardiogram reports, any catheterisation results
- Current medication list, especially anticoagulants and anti-anginals
- Recent bloodwork including cardiac markers and lipid profile
- A written account of your symptoms — what, when, how long, what brought it on
- A referral letter from your treating cardiologist
